Delusions of Adequacy Features

Short Takes - Jennifer Patton

DOA receives too many submissions for our staff to ever review them all. There are a lot of discs that are overlooked, not because they aren’t good or lacked something particular, but simply because there are only so many reviews we can crank out in a given week, month, or year. "Short Takes" attempts to showcase a bunch of releases that we may never have been able to completely cover otherwise. Consider these much shorter reviews of EPs and full-length albums that will hopefully give you an idea of what these bands are about in just a few sentences.

DOA's Guide to the Recordings of... - Jen Stratosphere Fanzine , Joe Davenport

A look at the recordings of overlooked or underrated bands.

One Offs - Joe Davenport

Essays, articles, and other "one offs" from DOA writers.

This column is one of several contexts in which the author writes about American roots music - in particular country, blues, and folk - and it may be read as a companion to his current blog, Yesterday's Wine.

This irregular column is here to provide a single-minded and stubborn trawl through the more obscure output of the lesser-known, as well as better-known, artists that orbit the DOA planet. Focusing on split-singles, stand-alone EPs, vinyl curios, download-only material, compilations, film soundtracks, reissues or the occasional new album less in need of an in-depth dissection.

Small Wonders - Joe Davenport

Music is too dynamic to be reduced to a single format forever. Tiny independent labels produce a wealth of 7”, CD-R, and tape releases each year. Because of the massive quantity of these things floating around out there, it is impossible for a site such as ours to devote album review space to these releases. The focus of this column is to dig through the crates and dish the dirt on some of these small wonders. If your band or label would like to submit a 7”, tape, or CD-R for consideration in this column please contact me: joed@adequacy.net

Idiom Idiots - Ben Ewing

The record shops have closed and the used bins that once collected dust are now collecting pretty pennies on eBay. For idiom idiots like us, it's time to upgrade to genre-wise crate digging 2.0. To read about a new idiom each day, visit Idiom Idiots, the writer's blog.

What is Rock? - Jim Cosby

Why did rock happen? Where did it come from and where is it going? Why is it that rock music came about in the era that has been called the "Age of Anxiety"? Why Memphis, TN? Why not? Can rock be over analyzed? What does rock say about society? What is it exactly that I love about rock music, anyway? Who the hell booked Shanana for the original Woodstock?

Musical Artifacts - Michael Vitrano

This writer wishes to address the void being created with the take over of digital media in the music industry. The physical identity we associate with music is losing out to convenience. This writer wishes to seek out those who will not go gently into that night, who will keep the Musical Artifact alive and well, and who agree that whatever comes along with the package should at least try to equal the beauty of the music.

This music writer is finally documenting the missing link that has plagued musicians and critics for decades: the link between rock music and shoes. Oh sure, on the surface, those two things may not seem so intrinsically related, but delve a little deeper, and you'll find every rock star and rock fan pays careful attention to their footwear. We're just here to keep you apprised.

Rubber Sole is a selection of work to appear semi-weekly. More posts can be found on the writer's weblog of the same name.

Unappreciated Album of the Month - Dan S. , Justin Vellucci , Jacob Price , Jeff Marsh , Chuck Zak , Adrian P. , Gary Blackwell

Regardless of how extensive your album collection, there are always one or two albums that touch you in a way none of the others do. Most of these did not bring in the critical success they deserved, but sometimes they're better because of that. This feature will look at a few underappreciated albums from the mid-90s and earlier and what makes them so special.

Do you have an album from the mid-90s or sooner that you would like to write about for an Unappreciated Album of the Month? Contact us for more information.
